DRS-DHHS Consolidation Announcement
The Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services announces an exciting development for Texans with disabilities. On March 1, 2005, The Division for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) will merge with the Division for Rehabilitation Services (DRS). This move creates the Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS). Under the direction of David Myers, this DRS office will have increased resources to provide comprehensive and specialized service delivery for consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The merger of DHHS with DRS means additional financial resources for services will be available for Texans who are deaf or hard of hearing. This additional money will be used to expand DHHS programs, especially the Regional Specialist and Hard of Hearing Programs. By adding more specialists in the field, outreach and referral efforts will be increased, which will mean more services for more consumers.
The merger will further coordinate the working relationship between the DHHS staff and the DRS field staff. The Office for DHHS will continue to be the link for DARS divisions that serve consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing. DHHS will continue to provide technical assistance to other departments in the HHS enterprise and to other state agencies, local governments and service providers regarding the needs of consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
